


There's something about Alcatraz that captivates me! I've been there 3 times and I can see more trips
in my future. Upon my first visit, I was amazed by how much history that little island holds. We all
know about the famous federal prison but did you know that it was a military prison first? Also, after
the federal prison closed, it was inhabited for 19 months by Native Americans protesting land claims.
Look into it. That little chunk of land has had a lot happen on it.










Guards didn't carry keys. That way if an inmate grabbed them through the bars they still couldn't get
out of their cell. The keys would be lowered on a string only when needed by a guard.

Yup, that's a dent in the wall from a bullet fired by a rioting
inmate as he fell over dead having been killed by the Marines.
